How to Detox without Ruining Your Life - Dina Savitz.
The word detox may bring up a range of emotions for you – fear, apprehension, disinterest and general negativity, especially since it sounds like you are toxic and need a “de-tox”.
You’re not, don’t worry.
However, as a naturopath I’m a firm believer that everyone needs to do some type of detoxification, and that it can be done without ruining your life.
Why should you detox?
There are over 80,000 toxins present in our environment – that’s a lot, isn’t it?
On a daily basis, you may be exposed to many of these toxins, even if you are eating pretty well and exercising every day.
These toxins are unavoidable and come in the form of processed foods (this is a big one!), cigarette smoke (both direct and second hand), plastics (like water bottles or cling wrap on food), air pollution, cleaning products and personal hygiene products.
Even though your body does have the ability to process these toxins, a large amount may overburden your natural detoxification processes – and result in you feeling run down, low in energy, flat, sluggish or just plain exhausted.
Other effects of toxins on your body may include recurrent headaches, allergies, muscle aching and weakness, skin issues such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, anaemia or long term effects such as hormonal irregularities, infertility, depression or chronic fatigue,
While your liver, kidneys, intestines and skin work every day to remove toxins from your body, they might appreciate a bit of help and the ability to rest every so often – just like you enjoy a holiday (or the occasional break from the kids)!
So a detox is simply a method of improving your health and making you feel better – and it definitely doesn’t have to be hard.
How do you detox?
One amazing detoxification practice you can start with is mixing 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (the Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar is delicious) to half a cup of warm water, and drinking this on the morning when you wake up, half an hour before you eat anything. This is a great way to kick start your digestion and get your liver working efficiently for the day.
Another way to introduce detoxing to your daily routine is to increase your intake of pure, filtered water – this is possibly the BEST way to help your body to flush out toxins and keep you regular. Try drinking 1-2L of water a day, away from your meals as drinking water while you’re eating can dilute your digestive juices.
You can also use certain supplements to support your body’s natural detoxification abilities such as chlorella and spirulina – adding either one of these green supplements to your daily diet will aid your body to detox, and there is research to suggest that these greens may even help clear your body of extra toxins such as heavy metals.
