About the Company
Weleda’s heritage dates back to the 1920s in Switzerland when philosopher Dr Rudolf Steiner and Dr Ita Wegman developed anthroposophic medicine. This form of medicine encourages the individual to see his or her body mind and spirit as intrinsically linked to our world; all part of one holistic system. Steiner and his team of dedicated scientists and doctors understood that a human body has a remarkable ability to heal itself but sometimes it needs a little help. So they developed a personal approach to health care using natural ingredients that can holistically work with and support our own body’s healing tendencies.
They started by creating one of the world’s first Biodynamic® gardens to grow what they needed. Patients were healed wellness and balance were restored to them and never once was a synthetic chemical or lab-made preservative used in the process.
So from humble beginnings Weleda has grown and is now represented in more than 50 countries around the world. Yet despite our success not a whole lot has changed since the 1920s; we still cultivate our own Biodynamic® gardens; we still believe natural ingredients truly provide what a body needs to be vibrant beautiful and well; and we continue to grow spreading our passion for beauty wellness and environmental respect around the world.
Anthroposophy – human wisdom
Weleda was founded in 1921 directly sprouting from the root of a unique approach to personal health and wellbeing called anthroposophy.
Anthroposophy a Greek word meaning "human wisdom" stems from the teachings of the scientist and philosopher Dr Rudolf Steiner. This philosophical movement encourages the individual to view the importance of his or her life in conjunction with the entire universe. The forces of our body soul and spirit are intrinsically connected and they are closely related to the processes that occur in nature.
« Anthroposophy recognises the connection between
the human being and nature »
Thus anthroposophy integrates immaterial spiritual understanding into the scientific study of human beings and nature. It has given impulses into many areas of human life including agricultural medical educational and artistic disciplines. Rudolf Steiner's inspiration led to the founding of Steiner Waldorf schools and kindergartens anthroposophical medicine natural body care and biodynamic farming.
